If you've never heard of Great Pyrenees before, you should! This incredible breed originates from the Pyrenees Mountains in France where it was originally bred as a Livestock Guardian Dog. Left to their own devices out in pasture, they have learned to embrace their instinctive independent spirit to keep themselves and their flock safe.
Their passive nature makes them perfect around all of your livestock. This list can include cows, goats, sheep, pigs, horses, and in some cases, even poultry.
On the flip side, they can be very fierce Guard Dogs who will put themselves in harm's way if it means protecting it's livestock and family from any threat.
Pyrenees are incredibly cold-hardy with their double layered coat, they absolutely love the rain and snow, and are overall, an amazing addition to your family farm or homestead.
Our company's name hits the nail right on the head for us:
We are passionate about Great Pyrenees!
No strangers to Large Breed dogs, we knew that being a family of 7 with an attraction to Homesteading made Pyrs an easy choice. This one-of-a-kind breed thrives under all circumstances, has an incredible work ethic, and overall deserves the happiest, healthiest life imaginable.
Passion Pyrs will do its utmost to improve the breed.
At Passion Pyrs, we strive, first and foremost, to be ethical breeders. This involves DNA, Genetic, and Breed Specific Health Testing. We also maintain working relationships with the families of our breeding pair to ensure the health of all past and future generations. Our dogs are well socialized and loved from Day 1, and although they are working dogs, they are irreplaceable family pets as well.
This is our first breeding pair who we have intuitively named
Lucius and Narcissa.
If you couldn't already tell, we are a bit of a nerdy family, to say the least. All of our family pets are, indeed, named after Harry Potter characters.
We look forward to growing our family, and yours, in the near future.
More information about them below.
Lucius is also available for Stud services to the right candidate!
Please note that our quiteria is as follows: DNA at or above 85% Great Pyrenees, breed specific Health tested, current Vet check or proof of current vaccinations, no major behavioral problems, monetary compensation or "Pick of the Litter" contract negotiable.

Lucius is our 100lb, purebred, male, Great Pyrenees.
And yes, at only 13 months, he is still considered a puppy. Even though he looks like a fully grown dog, he won't completely act like one for another 2 years or so.
His current job on our property is "Family Guardian Dog" (read more about that here). Although he was raised around livestock, he thrives best when he is with his family. He is extremely loving, loyal, obedient, gentle and yet, fiercely protective. His strong connection to our family makes him one you would not want to end up in an altercation with.
These characteristics are the reason he thrives as a
"Family Guardian Dog".
Narcissa is 100% Great Pyrenees and our newest addition.
At just 4 months old, she is in the thick of job and obedience training as well as well-rounded dog, human, and livestock socialization.
This being said, her future job on our farm will be the traditional "Livestock Guardian Dog". Narcissa is incredibly sweet, happy-go-lucky, intelligent and outgoing. Her and I have an intensely close bond that allows her to be independent most times, but obedient when needed. Narcissa picks up on routines, commands, and good manners with enthusiasm while also maintaining that typical Great Pyrenees sass.
These characteristics are the reason she will thrive as a
"Livestock Guardian Dog".
Please contact us if you cannot find an answer to your question.
Narcissa is our first scheduled Dam and will not be ready to produce a litter until her 3rd heat cycle or she turns 18 months old, whichever comes first. With this timeline, we can expect her to become pregnant in May 2024, and puppies to be ready for new homes in August 2024.
Although a litter from Lucius and Narcissa is a ways off, we can expect that the two will compliment each other in such a way that veterans of the breed and newbies alike will be able to appreciate what their puppies have to offer.
You should know that they require a large yard or property, hands-on training with socialization, and lots of patience. Great Pyrenees need a job or they can quickly become frustrated and destructive. They are prone to resource guarding and digging if not properly trained or stimulated. Mentally, they don't "grow up" until around 3 years old. At about 6 months old, they find their voice and will bark at just about anything.
This will depend on a few different factors. The age of the puppy, the sex of the puppy, and whether or not breeding rights are included. However, the average cost will be about $1200 per puppy.
In most cases, we will allow two puppies from the same litter to be bought together by the same family, given they have adequate space and resources to do so. However, we recommend that families do thorough research on "Littermate Syndrome" before deciding on it. In addition, both puppies must be purchased with a limited registration contract.
We raise, care for, and train all of our dogs and puppies at our homestead located in California City, California. It's a "small", rural town in Kern County, California, about 2 hours from Los Angeles and 1 hour from Bakersfield.
Absolutely! Whether you just need a dose of puppy love, or you want to meet each of the puppies before deciding on the perfect fit for your family, we are always willing to accept visitors. Message us to set up a day and time beforehand.
Limited Registration & Breeding Rights are two different contracts we offer with our puppies. If the intention of your family is to enjoy the company of your Pyr as a pet only, our Limited Registration contract is appropriate for you, as you will be required to spay or neuter your puppy. However, if you would like to continue the bloodline with one of our beauties as a moral and ethical breeder, you may receive Breeding Rights through us.
As stated before, Great Pyrenees were bred for a specific job: protecting livestock from their natural predators. With that being said, times have changed and Pyrs are no longer exclusively bred to roam with their sheep alone in the Pyrenees mountains. Over the years, they have adapted to being a part of a family consisting of both livestock and humans, but no matter what, they still need a job! Herein lies the "Family Guardian Dog" title. This describes a Pyr whose instincts to protect are incredibly strong, but has a less independent nature, and more of a family-centered motivation. These dogs are more likely to sit at your feet waiting for a command, or lay at the door of your home to protect from any unwanted visitors.
*Note: this does not mean they are bad with livestock, just that they are happier when surrounded by their humans.
Yes! In order to ensure the breed quality and health of all our animals, and ultimately, yours, all our breeding pairs are DNA tested through Embark. We screen for all genetic health issues, ancestry, marking variations, and even behavioral attributes. All prospective owners will have access to their specific litter information in their contract.
Currently, yes. Although the plan is to add more to our pack in the near future, we are dedicating all of our time and resources to our first breeding pair, Lucius and Narcissa. By the end of 2023, we should be ready to add another dog or two to our program. So stay in touch!
